Grafton J. Nunes currently serves as the 10th President of the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA), a position that he has held since 2010.
President Nunes came to CIA from Emerson College in Boston, where he served as founding Dean of the School of the Arts. Prior to his time at Emerson, he served for 22 years at Columbia University, concluding his tenure there as Associate Dean of Columbia’s School of the Arts. At both Emerson and Columbia, he was centrally involved in the development, implementation, and fundraising for capital projects.
In addition to his work in higher education, President Nunes has had an active career as a film writer and producer, including his production of the film The Loveless, directed by the 2010 Oscar winner for Best Director, Kathryn Bigelow.
President Nunes serves NASAD as a visiting evaluator, and previously served as a member of the Committee on Nominations.
President Nunes is a graduate of Columbia University, with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film History, Theory, and Criticism, and a Master of Philosophy degree in Theater History and Film Studies. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Religion from the College of the Holy Cross.
