O. GUSTAVO PLASCENCIA is Dean of Visual Arts at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. Previous academic appointments were held at the University of North Texas, Memphis College of Art, and Lycoming College.
Dean Plascencia is a visual artist whose creative work documents local ecosystems and practices walking methodologies to create a record of his surroundings. He explores the intersection of photography, nature, and memory, presenting landscapes as silent witnesses to personal and collective histories. His practice also focuses on the duality between personal and communal, and self and society.
Dean Plascencia’s work has been shown nationally and internationally including Instituto Fotografico de Medellin, The International Center of Bethlehem, The Polytechnic University of Valencia, and Academia de Bellas Artes San Carlos. He presented his creative research at the International Conference on The Arts in Society, Lisbon, Portugal (2019), the 33rd Annual Interdisciplinary Conference in Humanities (2018), Southeast College Art Conference (2018), and in 2018 he led the Walking Practices: The Body As Vehicle and Destination workshop at the International Community of Artist Scholars in San Francisco, CA. He currently serves as the Treasurer for the National Council for Art Administrators, on the Council of Readers at the College Art Association, and is a member of the Art in Public Places Committee in Miami Beach, Florida.
Dean Plascencia serves NASAD as a visiting evaluator.
Dean Plascencia holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography/New Media from the University of Colorado, Boulder and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fine Arts/Photography from the University of Texas at Arlington. He also attended the Escuela de Artes Plasticas “Ruben Herrera” in Saltillo, Coahuila Mexico.
