SUSANNE FLOYD GUNTER is the Coordinator of the Master of Education degree program and Converse Alternative Certification Art Education programs at Converse University in Spartanburg, SC. As a K-12 classroom art teacher and administrator for 28 years, Professor Gunter received numerous awards. Most recently, she received the 2019 Kathryne Amelia Brown Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Higher Education Level Award from the South Carolina Art Education Association.
Professor Gunter co-authored with A. Ray Doughty, The History of Arts Education in South Carolina: A Brief Retrospective, published by The South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education (May 2002), and contributed a chapter “Walking with Paulo in a Small Southern Town” to Bridging the Curriculum through Art (Wexler, A. and Shabag, V., editors, 2019). A lifetime member of the National Education Association and active in the National Association of Art Education, she serves as historian to the South Carolina Education Association and the South Carolina Art Education Association. She served two terms on the editorial review board for the journal Art Education. As a practicing artist, Professor Gunter exhibits locally and regionally. She has served on the boards of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union Counties, assisting them to consider issues such as sustainability and capacity.
Professor Gunter has served NASAD as Chair of the Committee on Ethics since 2019.
Professor Gunter holds a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and a Master of Arts in Art Education from the University of South Carolina.
