Matthew S. Gaynor serves as Head of the Art Department at Kansas State University. He previously served as Interim Director of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) School of Art and Design and for five years as Associate Dean for faculty affairs for the College of Architecture and the Arts. At UIC, Professor Gaynor taught at all levels of the curriculum and developed courses in introductory graphic design and photography for designers. He began his teaching career at the University of Kansas, and also held teaching positions at California State University at San Bernardino and the University of Cincinnati.
During a hiatus from teaching, Professor Gaynor served as creative director for F+W Publications before returning to academia at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has received numerous awards for his design work, which is focused on the intersection of type and image. He continues his practice of typographic design, as well as new modes of photographic portraiture.
Professor Gaynor was first elected to the Commission in 2016.
Professor Gaynor received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from Yale University.
